Computer viruses are becoming more sophisticated and harder to eliminate. The most dangerous one tends to infect your computer, lock up all your files and then demands a ransom from you. The ransom they ask for ranges from $500 to over $2,000. Some of our very own clients have been infected by this and there is nothing we can do to help besides starting fresh. There was even an article on the New York Times on this issue “How My Mom Got Hacked“. We’ll show you a few ways to have a backup in case disaster strikes.
Offline Backup – This method provides you with a physical hardware. An “External Hard Drive” which plugs into your computer via USB and you can use it to make a system or file backup. This method can Integrate with CrashPlan Online backup. Remember to unplug the external drive after full backup has been complete in order to prevent viruses from locking it as well.

Note: DO NOT purchase a drive larger than 2TB if you plan to use Windows Image Backup option.
If you have a Windows 7 or 8 computer we also recommend making a “System Image” in case you get infected with the virus or the internal hard drive fails. This will save you time and money by just restoring things versus recreating from scratch. This method does not work if your external drive is greater than 2TB so purchase the right size if you decide to do it.
Online Backup – There are many providers of online backups that store all the files on their servers. The great thing about this is that in case of theft, fire or other failures, your important files are safe (as long as you have created a strong password with the Backup provider) Our favorite program to use is CrashPlan Unlimited Online Backup. We would recommend that you get the Individual or Family plan based on how many devices you would like to back up.
Backing up is a good plan but not getting infected in the first place is even better.
